Did you know I’m a Harpist?

My clients are aware that I have a harp in my office. Yes, a big one. It’s a lever harp which is about 3/4 the size of a full pedal harp which is the type you see in orchestra/symphonies. I’ve now been playing the harp for about 3 years and yes, I actually take lessons and play in recitals. Luckily I have picked up on the harp pretty quickly because I’m an accomplished pianist and a harp is really just a piano on its side so sight reading is not a problem for me. It’s just a matter of learning the technique and strengthening my fingers.

Why the harp? You may be asking. Well, the harp is a very soothing instrument and often used in music therapy which is why I have it. I sometimes feel like an intuition in therapy to ask clients for permission if I can play a particular song for them and it has led to some interesting break throughs for my adult clients. Sometimes I play when a client is overly anxious to help them calm down and even circumvent panic attacks. My child and teenage clients love to strum the strings and listen to the vibrations.

Harpists have long been involved in music therapy for the sick and elderly and often a harpist is called in to help for the end of life process to help calm patients who are near passing away. I have not used my harp for this purpose but I do use it to help clients dealing with significant trauma. With this in mind, I would love to share my harp playing with you and anyone who would like to listen. I now have a tik tok channel in which I have been recording my harp music so anyone can listen at any time and for any reason. It can be used for anxiety, to aid in sleep, for pain management, panic attacks, meditation, or just entertainment. Here are some links to my videos. Feel free to follow and I will continue to record more music.

  1. This is fantastic!! When you brought up the history of music therapy it reminded me of David playing his harp for King Saul to calm his mind. You are so talented! Thank you for sharing it❤️
